UPDATE (Fri, Sept. 12): Charges laid after Lethbridge senior assaulted

Original Story:

The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) says charges are pending in connection with an assault against an 80-year-old man.

It occurred around noon on Wednesday, September 10, near the Save-On Foods on the 1200 block of 2A Avenue North.

According to LPS, the senior’s bike was stolen, and when he confronted the man who took it, a physical altercation ensued.

“The subject punched the elderly male, causing him to fall backward and strike his head on the pavement. The subject fled the scene prior to police arrival,” LPS alleges.

The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Chinook Regional Hospital. He was later airlifted to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, where he remains in critical condition.

LPS says the suspect called the police station around 8:00 p.m. to turn himself in. He was arrested a short time later at a home on the north side.

The investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending.

No further information is being released at this time, but LPS says an update will be provided when available.
