Expansion FC Supra du Quebec adds to its roster with top two picks in U Sports draft

Expansion FC Supra du Quebec took University of Montreal midfielder Calin Calaidjoglu with the first overall pick in Friday’s Canadian Premier League-U Sports draft.

Calaidjoglu, 24, scored six goals and added three assists in U Sports play this season. Named a second-team all-Canadian, he scored in a 2-0 win over Laval in the RSEQ final.

Born in Moldova, he grew up in LaSalle, Que., playing for the CF Montreal youth team with a loan stint in Italy with Bologna. He has also played for FC Laval in Ligue1 Quebec.

“Calin fits the type of soccer that our coaches want to install on the field … He’s a good footballer,” said FC Supra president and co-founder Rocco Placentino.

Supra also had the second overall pick, taking UQTR forward Alexandre Marcoux in keeping with its plan to only field players from Quebec. The two become the first players on Supra’s roster, with more signings expected in December.

Marcoux was named the RSEQ Most Outstanding Player, scoring seven goals and adding five assists in 10 games for UQTR.

“Young, passionate, energetic, has an eye for goal … He’s a poacher,” said Placentino, who knows Marcoux from their time at CS Saint-Laurent. “He’s a pain in the you-know-what for defenders. He’s always on them. And in the (penalty) box, he’s dangerous.”

Mount Royal University defender Joseph Green went third to Vancouver FC before Pacific FC took University of Victoria centre back Archie Tugwell, who joins older brother Fin on the Vancouver Island team.

Fin, another Vikes product, went 12th overall in last year’s U Sports draft.

Friday’s two-round draft is open to undergraduates who participated in a U-Sports men’s soccer program in 2025. It allows student-athletes the chance to earn pro experience while maintaining their university eligibility.

CPL clubs may add up to three players on U Sports contracts to their developmental roster. Such talent does not count towards a club’s player compensation budget.

Prior to Friday, 115 players had been taken in the U Sports draft, including eight chosen more than once. Of those, 68 went on to sign contracts with CPL clubs, including Canadian international defender Joel Waterman (now in the MLS with the Chicago Fire) and CF Montreal midfielder Victor Loturi.

Vancouver FC was also the lone club to select three players in the draft on Friday afternoon, after acquiring an additional first-round pick from Inter Toronto FC (formerly York United FC) as part of the Gabriel Bitar transfer in January.
