Lethbridge Library Will Host National “Demystify Islam” Campaign

LETHBRIDGE: A Nation-Wide campaign to remove the stigma around one of the most popular religions in the world is coming to Lethbridge.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association is holding over 135 “Demystify Islam” Open Houses in more than 35 communities across Canada.

Spokesperson Shahrukh Abid says recent terrorist attacks in Indonesia, Turkey, the U-S and Paris have created misconceptions about muslims.

“So basically the whole point is to just let people know that Islam is not a religion of violence and we condemn this sort of violence. These terrorist groups have nothing to do with [the religion], rather Islam is a religion of piece and harmony that promotes brotherhood.”

Abid says all Muslims aren’t terrorists and the acts of minorites are tarnishing the image of Islam.

He believes some Canadians are afraid of Islam.

“It has happened to me where people have shut me off, saying ‘You’re a muslim which means you follow Islam and Islam is linked to terrorism.”

Anyone looking to learn more about Islam is invited to the Lethbridge Public Library Central Branch from 1-4 PM Saturday.
