LETHBRIDGE, AB – A 50-year-old man from Raymond, found guilty of three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault in relation to crimes that occurred in the early to mid-1980s received his sentence on Wednesday, June 5.

Relating to counts two and three under the Juvenile Delinquents Act, he’s facing 12 months probation with the usual stipulations of keeping the peace, remaining in contact with his probation officer and not associating or communicating with his victims.

On counts four and five under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the man will serve 60 days in custody at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre and an additional 30 days to be served in the community under supervision. The time at LCC will be served intermittently on the weekends.

Additionally, he’s facing 12 months of probation globally which will start immediately and is to be served concurrently. A weapons prohibition and a DNA order were also a part of his sentence.

The man’s name is not being released because of a publication ban, and because he was under the age of 18 at the time of the incidents. He was convicted in early March.

Two of his victims, whose names are also not being released due to their ages at the time of the incidents, gave victim impact statements before the judge rendered his decision.

The first victim detailed the abuse she suffered and shared with the court that she did not tell anyone about what happened to her until she was in her 20s. She spoke about the guilt and shame she felt as a result, and also admitted to suffering from depression as well.

The second victim shared some similar sentiments regarding guilt and shame resulting from the trauma but went into greater detail about the psychological pain she suffered.

The woman spoke about her lack of dignity and self-worth, how she hated herself as a result of the abuse and described in graphic detail how she wanted to take her own life to stop the pain.

Additionally, she mentioned how afraid she was for her young daughter when she would go to school around the time that she was the same age as her mother when she was abused.

Background:

The crimes that occurred happened between Oct. 1980 and Aug. 1986.

The man was initially charged with six sex-related crimes, including four counts of sexual assault and two counts of indecent assault.

However, two of the charges were dismissed, because the Court of Queen’s Bench judge said he couldn’t decide who to believe.
