Town of Coaldale launches public consultation plans for multi-use recreation facility

COALDALE, AB – The Town of Coaldale will once again be turning to the public to help in developing plans for their new rec centre.

It is being built to coincide with the new high school on the northwestern end of the community.

800 residents responded to the Sport and Recreation Needs Assessment Survey last summer, and out of all possible recreation options they could go with, the most popular option was to build an indoor multi-use recreation facility.

Chief Administrative Officer Kalen Hastings says it is now a matter of deciding what will go in it.

“It’s going to be a large building with an upper track with a multi-use sport field court on the main level, but in terms of what else can fit into that facility, the sky’s really the limit. There are funding considerations, of course, but there’s no limit in terms of the creativity and the rocks we want to turn over at this stage.”

The first step is to ensure they have the proper architectural and design consultants.

From there, the Town of Coaldale will have community-focused groups and stakeholders look more deeply into the issue this September, while also launching another public survey.

As much as $10-million has been budgeted for the total project.

While the number might sound high, Hastings says they want to be smart with how they spend it.

“If you’ve got a large multi-use rec facility and, say, people would like to include a climbing wall, for example, if we can’t afford the climbing wall today, perhaps we could design it in a certain spot in the building where it can be included after some fundraising efforts later.”

The consultations are expected to last the rest of the year.

Hastings is not yet sure how long it will take to get a final report and the designs finalized, adding that it will depend on what exactly gets recommended and how much each item will cost.
