Free local potatoes up for grabs at annual “Spud Day” east of Coaldale

COALDALE, AB – If you want to get your hands on 20 lbs of free local red potatoes, you can do that on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at a local farm east of Coaldale.

The Potato Growers of Alberta, in partnership with Perry Farms are holding their 5th annual “Spud Day.” The purpose of it, says Co-Owner Chris Perry, is to get “city folk” out to see how potatoes are grown, and to give back to the community. Last year, 20,000 pounds of free potatoes were given away.

“I got the idea from a guy up north who had done it – a similar day – a few years back and he said it just went over very well. And I thought ‘well, that’s a pretty cool idea,’ so we kind of started this, and we ended up with a lot more people than we probably originally expected. And it seems to be growing a little bit all the time.”

Last year, nearly 1,000 people showed up ready to pick newly windrowed potatoes. While the location changes slightly each year, this year Perry says it’s about 14 km east of Coaldale at the Chin turnoff on Highway 3 along the service road just east of the potato domes.

When people arrive, they’ll be given a sack to fill up.

“People get to come and see how the potatoes are growing in the field and how we lift them and ask any questions that they want.

“There’s lots of potatoes for everybody. We do end up getting a lot of people coming after noon (12 p.m.), but we actually have to go back to work.”

Saturday, Aug.17 will be the only day to pick up the free potatoes, and the event is weather dependent. The rest of the crop, which Perry says is average this year, will be then taken for processing at the McCain and Frito Lay plants near Taber.
