LETHBRIDGE, AB – A new report from Rentals.ca claims that Lethbridge not only has the most affordable housing among Alberta’s cities, but is one of the cheapest in the country.

As of August 2019, a one bedroom home in Lethbridge went for an average of $917 per month, which is down 0.8% from July. The price for two-bedroom units were down by 0.3% at $1,094.

The report considers all types of rental housing that have either one or two bedrooms.

These prices mean that Lethbridge is the 33rd most affordable city in Canada out of 37 that were analyzed and the cheapest of six communities in Alberta.

In Alberta, the closest was Red Deer (ranked number 31) at $1,041 and $1,180 respectively. Average rental prices in Grande Prairie (28) are $1,057 and $1,256, Edmonton (26) was $1,074 and $1,333, Fort McMurray (25) was $1,247 and $1,366, and Calgary (19) was the most expensive in the province at $1,303 and $1,487.

“Your smaller cities like Lethbridge and Red Deer are fairly close together in terms of the size of the city and also just in terms of the rents there,” says Rentals.ca Content Director Paul Danison, “And quite frankly, I mean with the weather in Lethbridge and the number of jobs, it’s a pretty desirable place to be for the price.”

For Alberta as a whole, the average monthly rent for any type of housing and for any number of units was $1,322 in July. Nationally, that number is $1,928 per month.

LNN reported back in November 2018 on the apartment vacancy rates in Lethbridge from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. They said 4.7% of apartments in the city were available, which was down by 5.1% from the same time in 2017.
