City limiting Access-A-Ride use and Animal Shelter visitation

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is taking further actions amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

This comes on the heels of Premier Jason Kenney announcing a state of public emergency Tuesday.

The city is following the province’s guidelines for public gatherings, which includes:

  • All events with 50+ people are to be cancelled
  • No attendance at rec centres, casinos, bingo halls, bars, theatres, and other facilities
  • Sit-down restaurants can remain open at lower capacity

Effective immediately, the Access-A-Ride transit service will be limited to essential travel only.

“Essential travel includes things like trips for food, required supplies, medical appointments or getting to work. It does not include social outings.”

Online booking has been disabled. Instead, all travellers must phone Access-A-Ride at 403-329-6464.

The Lethbridge Animal Shelter is also taking the following precautions:

  • Volunteer programs and general public access will be suspended for at least two weeks. The situation will be re-evaluated after this time
  • Individuals are asked to phone the shelter ahead of time at 403-320-4099 to arrange a time to pick up their lost pet or view/socialize with prospective dogs and cats
  • Phone the animal shelter before bringing in a stray cat or dog

“We believe this will limit the traffic through the shelter while allowing staff to stay on top of animal health care and sanitization procedures for the time being. Thank you to those who volunteer at the shelter for all their efforts and we look forward to welcoming you back once normal operations resume.”

Residents of Lethbridge are asked to use the city’s online services instead of coming in to city hall whenever possible.
