No high school sports competition in Alberta until Stage 3 of relaunch: ASAA

Aug 14, 2020 | 10:35 AM

High school sports in Alberta have been put on pause until further notice.

The Alberta Schools’ Athletics Association (ASAA) announced on Thursday that all of its fall provincial championships have been postponed until the provincial government moves to Stage 3 of Alberta’s relaunch from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Once that happens, the ASAA says it will consider what the implications are for inter-school athletic competition and provincial championships “with a focus that places safety of all participants first and foremost.”

In the meantime, the ASAA says member schools are allowed to run in-school practices provided they comply with the province’s restrictions regarding cohorts. However, scrimmages or competition between schools is not permitted.

The association says it has heard clearly the desire of its members to return to competition and championship play and is ready to act once government and health policies allow them to do so.

The ASAA says winter sports will be addressed closer to the start of their season of play.
