Winston Churchill High School under COVID “Watch”, outbreak at Wilson Middle School

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Winston Churchill High School is now under a COVID “Watch” status.

The provincial government declares a “Watch” status when a school has five or more cases where COVID-19 could have been acquired or transmitted in the school.

The Lethbridge School Division says to date, Alberta Health Services (AHS) has notified them of five cases at Winston Churchill High School.

Based on the advice from AHS, the school will remain open.

AHS has determined the close contacts of the five cases, and those close contacts have been notified and are now required to quarantine.

“To ensure students remain connected to their teachers and to the school community, Winston Churchill has a plan in place to deliver online education,” the division said in a release.

“For students whose teachers have been directed to quarantine by AHS, their classes will be taught online, by their teachers, via Microsoft TEAMS. Students will remain home (only for those classes) to continue learning with their subject-specialist teachers.”

Students who are not in quarantine and who have teachers that remain in the school will attend those classes in person.

“For example, a student may stay home to learn on TEAMS with their teacher for Math, but then come to school for any other classes that day. Online learning will only occur as long as the teacher is asked to quarantine, which is typically 14 days,” the division explained.

“For students asked to quarantine, their teachers will continue to support their learning through Microsoft TEAMS.”

The division added that for students who currently have a teacher in isolation, school staff will communicate with them regarding a timeline for their class or classes being online.

WILSON MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Lethbridge School Division has also confirmed that an outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared at Wilson Middle School.

The division said they were notified of two active cases at the schools by AHS on November 1.

Per government definition, an “Outbreak” in a school setting is defined as two or more confirmed cases within a 14-day period. As a result of this, Wilson Middle School is required to follow all AHS direction and protocols.

Close contacts are being notified and the division says the school will remain open. Those close contacts will be notified by email and asked to quarantine immediately.
