Lethbridge School Division proposes changes to school boundaries

LETHBRIDGE, AB– The Lethbridge School Division has proposed to change the boundaries for all of its schools due to some overpopulation in certain schools.

According to the division, in west, south, and north Lethbridge, elementary, middle, and high school boundaries are set to change.

Certainly, on the west side, the population keeps growing as the city grows, making schools like Chinook High School (CHS) overpopulated for the capacity that the building can hold.

One change is in response to trends in population, the impact of growth on school capacities, and the location of the new elementary school in south Lethbridge.

The review of the boundaries started back in 2018 when they saw the growing trend of schools being crowded.

In CHS’s case, the school currently has an enrolment of 1,164 students, with room for only 1,200.

For elementary schools, in South Lethbridge, there are three schools, but on the north side, there is one school that is greatly overpopulated.

In west Lethbridge, there are more children housed than the amount that are able to attend the schools whether it being elementary, middle, or high school.

The division says one solution is to build another school with provincial funding, but that would be three to four years away.

Growing concerns have risen from parents and students asking if they will have to change their student’s schooling or move entirely.
