U of L It’s Worth A Shot! contest now open to faculty and staff

May 28, 2021 | 10:53 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB- Two weeks after launching the It’s Worth A Shot! contest to encourage students to get vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus before the start of the Fall 2021 semester, the University of Lethbridge has now opened it up for faculty and staff to do the same through a contest of their own.

The faculty contest is open to staff at both the Lethbridge and Calgary campuses.

“The health and safety of our community has been, and continues to be, our top priority,” says U of L President and Vice-Chancellor Mike Mahon.

“We very much want to return to an in-person experience for our students this fall, and a high vaccination rate is key to getting there. Our campuses are like small cities. We know vaccinating the population is making our province safer and if there are strong vaccination rates among members of our campus community, we can ensure it is a safer place for everyone.”

Faculty and staff who have received at least one dose of vaccination are eligible to enter a draw for a chance to win one of five free reserved parking spaces for one year, a one in five chance to win a ONE Pass memberships to 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sports and Wellness facilities, and a one in five chance to win a Faculty of Fine Arts ticket package.

Other prizes include bookstore gift certificates, and other small prizes, with Calgary-based equivalent prizes awarded for winners from the Calgary campus.

“Our faculty and staff have worked extraordinarily hard throughout this pandemic to serve our students primarily in an online setting,” says Mahon. “Everyone has shown great commitment, resilience and adaptability, but there is nothing like starting a new academic year on campus, in-person, and together. Our goal is to be able to do that safely.”

U of L students who receive their COVID-19 vaccine before Sept. 8 can also participate in their own contest.

A COVID-19 vaccine will not be mandatory, but is encouraged for students and staff at the U of L to get before the fall semester.

According to Mahon, over 2,000 students have entered the contest so far, and he expects faculty and staff will similarly take up the call.

Students have until 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 8, 2021 to enter the contest.
