Pollinator cafes add vibrancy to downtown Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge has collaborated with the Helen Schuler Nature Centre to make downtown more vibrant and environmentally sustainable.

A total of 40 new flower planters that are filled with drought-tolerant flowers have been installed downtown. Organizers are calling them “Pollinator Cafes”.

In a news release from the city, Jackie Cardinal, Natural Resource Coordinator for City Parks, says this project was an easy way to bring multiple benefits to the downtown area.

“Creating the Pollinator Cafes has been a fun way to showcase the different types of pollinators that call Lethbridge home and help keep our gardens and local vegetation healthy and productive,” said Cardinal. “Learning about how we can create beautiful spaces while supporting and enhancing pollinator habitats, large and small, is so important for the health and wellness of our ecosystems and city overall.”

Green infrastructure has been part on an ongoing effort by the City to improve the health, vitality and growth of downtown Lethbridge. In 2007, the City created the “Heart of our City Master Plan” which includes objectives to make downtown beautifully landscaped with flora that represents the uniqueness of Southern Alberta.
