Taber Police arrest man allegedly brandishing a large weapon

TABER, AB – The Taber Police Service (TPS) has arrested a man following an incident where a masked individual was reportedly seen walking with a large weapon, which police described as a machete.

On May 2, 2023, at approximately 9:00 a.m., officers were alerted that the suspect was walking with the weapon in the 5200 block of 58 Avenue.

Police were able to locate the man, who reportedly dropped the weapon when asked, but before police could question the individual further, he allegedly fled on foot.

The TPS set up a cordon where the man was last seen, and as a precautionary measure, nearby schools went into lockdown.

The RCMP Canine Unit was called in to assist and located the suspect hiding in a backyard in the 6100 block of 53 Street South.

He was subsequently taken into custody but refused to identify himself.

After further investigation, police were able to confirm the suspect’s identity.

George Gregory Kibble, 20, of no fixed address, has been charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, personation, obstruction, two counts of mischief, two counts of failure to comply with a release order, and failure to comply with an undertaking.

A Judicial Interim Release Hearing was held and Kibble was remanded to appear in Lethbridge court on May 3, 2023.
