Fire ignites in Lethbridge waste collection truck due to improper disposal

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Officials at the City of Lethbridge and local fire crews are reminding residents that there are items that cannot go into their residential black garbage carts.

In a news release issued on June 21, 2023, officials indicated that the improper disposal of a large battery and aerosol can caused a small fire in the back of a waste collection truck on June 13.

Due to quick thinking from the driver, the fire was extinguished before it caused severe and costly damage, according to officials.

The City of Lethbridge said hazardous household waste, including batteries, aerosols and other materials, should not be disposed of in residential garbage bins, but instead, at proper waste drop-off spots.

Lethbridge residents looking to rid themselves of tricky materials can learn more through the City of Lethbridge website or by downloading the Lethbridge Loop mobile app to find locations.

City officials are also using this incident as an example to show that residents should bring their carts back onto their property following collection, to ensure that others do not dispose of waste incorrectly.
