LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge College brought back Farm Field Day for 2023 after a successful first year in 2022.

The event gives members of the agricultural community the opportunity to tour the Lethbridge College Research Farm, and learn about the projects that are being undertaken at the site.

Researchers from the college’s Mueller Irrigation Group and Advanced Post-harvest Technology Centre were at Farm Field Day to inform those in attendance.

Dr. Willemijn Appels, senior research chair for the Mueller Irrigation Group, said the main project focus at the 385-acre farm is irrigation, which is afforded to the Lethbridge area due to the presence of the river.

Appels explained, “We have a bunch of water and nutrient projects on the go. This year, we have one set of trials, as well as three demonstrations with different crops. We’re testing some practical aspects of growing a crop with drip lines buried underneath [the ground].”

In addition to the experts from Lethbridge College, researchers from Olds College, Lakeland College, and the University of Lethbridge were at the event to share information about their research.

Olds College and Lakeland College, like Lethbridge College, are part of the Pan-Canadian Smart Farm Network, a group of seven institutions funded by the Canadian Agri-Food Automation and Intelligence Network to support emerging opportunities in the agriculture sector.

David Fullerton, Director of Applied Research at Olds College’s Centre for Innovation, said the Farm Field Day is a great opportunity to see the work a partner school like Lethbridge College brings to the Smart Farm Network.

Fullerton said, “It was fantastic to come down here. I’ve heard so much about what they’re doing, fantastic to come see the work they are doing and how that might translate into something we could do in partnership with them.”

Fullerton added, “We [in Olds] don’t have irrigation, so it’s really great to see the innovations that they’re doing around the irrigation side.”

Lethbridge College announced it was joining the Pan-Canadian Smart Farm Network on June 7, 2023.
