LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge woman has been sentenced in a baby abuse case.

On August 18, 2023, the woman, 31, was sentenced to two years in prison for failing to provide the necessaries of life.

The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) said that on January 18, 2023, officers were called to a home on the north side of the city to check on the welfare of a six-week-old girl. The LPS said they had received information that suggested the child was being abused. The child was taken to the hospital in Lethbridge before being transferred to a medical facility in Calgary for further treatment.

A publication ban imposed by the court prevents the release of any information that could identify the victim, including the name of the woman sentenced.

The woman pleaded guilty to one charge of failing to provide the necessaries of life on June 16, 2023, in relation to the case.

The woman will serve 409 days in jail after receiving credit for 320 already served.

Another man was sentenced to seven years in prison on August 4, 2023 in the same case. He was convicted for one count of failing to provide the necessaries of life, and one count of aggravated assault.
