Lethbridge toppled 93-year-old heat record Thursday

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It has been nearly a full century since Lethbridge had a February 1 that was over 16 degrees Celsius.

Environment Canada said 27 communities in Alberta set new daily maximum temperature records on Thursday, February 1, 2024.

Lethbridge and Cardston tied for the warmest areas in the province, each reaching 16.4 degrees.

In Lethbridge, the old record was 16.1 and was set in 1931. Cardston hit a maximum of 16 in 1992.

Other areas in southern Alberta to break existing heat records include Banff, Bow Island, Brooks, Claresholm, Crowsnest Pass, High River, Milk River, Pincher Creek, and Waterton Lakes National Park.

From unseasonably warm to winter norms, Environment Canada has also issued a snowfall warning for a portion of southern Alberta.

Between 10-20 cm of snow is expected to fall between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, impacting communities such as Lethbridge, Taber, Cardston, Pincher Creek, Claresholm, and High River.
