LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Watch has been serving the community for five years.

The Watch is a program from the Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) in which trained volunteers patrol downtown and help with incidents like drug overdoses.

Members started patrolling on May 1, 2019.

Since then, the LPS says The Watch has assisted in nearly 32,000 events, with the majority of those being public service calls including wellness checks, safe walks, arranging transport for vulnerable people, facilitating needle pick-ups and the deployment of Narcan to overdose victims. Over the last five years, that translates to almost 19,000 volunteer hours.

Officials note there are currently 17 volunteers in the program, five full-time team leads and three casual team leads.

To celebrate the anniversary, The Watch hosted a barbecue at Galt Gardens on Thursday.

Program manager Shane Kisinger is the fourth manager in the initiative’s history, having been with the group since January 3, 2023. He joined after retiring as an LPS officer.

He says it is satisfying to see the program achieve the five-year milestone and he is happy to help lead a strong group of volunteers.

Kisinger says The Watch is currently recruiting new volunteers. Those interested in getting involved can find more information at the LPS website.
