Allegations of animal abuse at Lethbridge care provider

Sep 13, 2024 | 11:12 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge News Now is working to learn more about a situation at a local facility that cares for dogs.

A former employee of the business posted a video to social media that contains security camera footage from March 23, 2024.

The video allegedly shows the owner of the business handling a dog that was in their care in a rough manner. It has since been deleted after the former employee reportedly received threats.

LNN has reached out to the original social media poster for comments but they have not responded.

The Lethbridge Police Service told us that this matter is under the jurisdiction of the Alberta SPCA.

A spokesperson with the Alberta SPCA was not able to confirm any particular details about an investigation. The organization shared the following statement with LNN:

We are unable to confirm or share details about investigations. In general terms, we can tell you that our Peace Officers enforce the Animal Protection Act (APA) and they take every investigation seriously. After completing a thorough investigation, they will consider many factors when deciding whether charges under the APA are warranted, including the strength of the evidence, whether there’s a reasonable likelihood of a conviction, and whether a prosecution is in the public interest.

Regardless of the outcome of an investigation, our Peace Officers will take the opportunity to educate animal owners and caretakers about proper animal care and husbandry.

LNN has also not heard back from the animal care provider nor the accused business owner.

We will share more details on this matter once they become available.
