Olivia & Noah once again Alberta’s top baby names

The list of Alberta’s most popular baby names was largely unchanged in 2024.

The Government of Alberta says, for the record 12th year in a row, Olivia was the most common name given to a girl, while this was the sixth consecutive time that Noah was the top name for boys.

Minister for Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Dale Nally says this year’s list of baby names showcases Albertans’ deep respect for their strong cultural roots.

He says some parents were inspired by nature with names like Cedar, Hope, and Prairie. Some got inspiration from animals such as Bear, Fox, Jaguar and Sora, while others looked to the night sky, choosing names such as Celestial, Cassiopeia, Andromeda and Orion.

Others are names that express joy like Serenity, Hope, Heavenly, Blessing, and Bliss. Some are being set up for careers in the rodeo with names like Rowdy, Shooter, and Stryder.

“Congratulations to all those who welcomed a child in 2024 and Albertans who took part in the contest to guess the winning names – you continue to make this event my favourite time of year,” says Nally.

More than 50,000 children were born in the province last year.

The most popular names for baby boys in 2024 were:

1. Noah
2. Oliver
3. Liam
4. Theodore
5. Henry
6. William
7. Ethan
8. Leo
9. Levi
10. Jack/Lucas

The most popular names for baby girls in 2024 were:

1. Olivia
2. Charlotte
3. Amelia
4. Sophia
5. Emma
6. Ava
7. Harper
8. Isla
9. Sophie
10. Ellie

Historically, girls’ names that held the No. 1 spot for the longest consecutive time period include:

• Olivia: 12 years (2013-2024)
• Jessica: six years (1990-1995)
• Emily: five years (1998-2002)

Historically, boys’ names that held the No. 1 spot for the longest consecutive time period include:

• Ethan: nine years (2001-2009)
• Liam: seven years (2010-2016)
• Noah: six years (2019-2024)
• Matthew: five years (1995-1999)
