Lethbridge among the Alberta cities ‘Lighting Up’ for Global Day of Inclusion

LETHBRIDGE – Special Olympics Alberta is celebrating 50 years of their movement changing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through sport and creating more inclusive communities this weekend.

In celebration of the Special Olympics 50th anniversary, they’ve announced Tim Hortons as the national partner for the Day of Inclusion on Saturday, July 21.

Tim Hortons selected the donut designed by Savannah, a Special Olympics Alberta athlete from Grande Prairie, to be the official Day of Inclusion donut with proceeds from every donut sold going towards the Special Olympics.

Major landmarks, stadiums and iconic buildings around the world will turn RED in a global display of unity as part of the Special Olympics 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Lethbridge City Hall will be the local building lighting up, while more than 170 landmarks worldwide will participate in the Light Up for Inclusion initiative.

On Tuesday, July 17, the High Level Bridge in Edmonton lit up to recognize the start of the Special Olympics Unified Cup taking place in Chicago, Illinois

Also, in Edmonton on Saturday, ATB will light up red. In Calgary, Reconciliation Bridge, the Calgary Tower, McMahon Stadium, and the Stephen Avenue Galleria Trees will all join the initiative.

In a release, Special Olympics Alberta believe this will create a global display of tolerance, respect and celebration of difference.
