Men’s team sweeps while women’s team drops two in Pronghorn hockey roundup

LETHBRIDGE – The cozy confines of Nicolas Sheran Arena didn’t prove to be an advantage for the Pronghorn women’s hockey team this weekend, while a trip east to Saskatchewan helped the Pronghorn men’s hockey team get their first two wins of the young Canada West hockey season.

Sam McKechnie’s late goal broke a 2-2 tie on Friday, Oct. 12, and handed new Pronghorn men’s hockey bench boss Murray Nystrom his first Canada West win with a 3-2 victory over the Regina Cougars.

McKechnie’s goal came with just a minute and four seconds left in regulation to sink the Cougars.

Taylor Fisher and Jordan Roy scored the other goals for the Pronghorns, while third-year goaltender Garret Hughson turned aside 31 Regina shots to earn his first victory of the season.

The Lethbridge Pronghorns followed up that performance with a 4-2 win the following night on Saturday, Oct. 13, to earn the weekend sweep.

Michael Grant, Connor Sanvido, Justin Valentino and Landon Gross lit the lamp for the Pronghorns.

It was another strong night for Garret Hughson as well, as the Cougars outshot the Pronghorns 43-21 in the game.

The Pronghorns record now sits at 2-2 on the season, and they’ll be on the road again next weekend when they travel to Saskatoon to take on the Saskatchewan Huskies.

Back in Lethbridge, it was the strong goaltending of Regina Cougars goaltender Jane Kish who spoiled home opening weekend for the Pronghorn women’s hockey team.

Kish had a 45 save shutout on Friday night to lead her team to a 2-0 win, and she was the story over the final two periods, making 38 of her 45 saves over the final 40 minutes.

Come Saturday afternoon, the Regina Cougars completed the weekend sweep thanks to a perfect three-for-three performance on the power play leading to a 4-3 win over the Pronghorns.

Lethbridge pushed hard, but ultimately specialty teams doomed the home team because, in addition to scoring on all three of their power play opportunities, Regina killed off four of five Pronghorn power plays.

Alli Borrow, Tricia Van Vaerenbergh and Brett Campbell scored in a losing cause.

The Pronghorns fall to 1-3-0, and they’ll look to correct course on home ice next weekend when they host the Saskatchewan Huskies for a pair of games.
