One COVID case reported at Picture Butte’s St. Catherine School, 13 active cases within Holy Spirit schools

PICTURE BUTTE, AB – A case of COVID-19 has been confirmed at St. Catherine School in Picture Butte.

The Holy Spirit Catholic School Division says all close contacts have been informed and are now required to isolate. The division could not report if the infected individual is a staff member or student.

As of Monday, March 15, there are 13 active cases between five Holy Spirit schools.

There is the one infection at St. Catherine, two at Catholic Central High School in Lethbridge, one at Our Lady of the Assumption School in Lethbridge, five at St. Francis Junior High School in Lethbridge and four at St. Teresa of Calcutta in Lethbridge.

These cases have resulted in the isolation of roughly 440 staff and students.

Cases in schools have become an issue, particularly in Lethbridge.

On Monday, the Lethbridge School Division’s Superintendent Cheryl Gilmore said between six different schools, 45 students have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

The Holy Spirit Catholic School Division announced over the weekend that St. Francis Junior High School would be shifting classes to an online model this week.

The Lethbridge School Division does not plan to put entire schools into online-only learning at this time.
