Palliser to Select Panel For External Review

LETHBRIDGE: Palliser Regional Schools will form a three member panel to oversee an external review of school system operations.

The Board of Trustees voted last month to conduct the review after an online petition calling for the suspension of Superintendent Kevin Gietz collected nearly 500 signatures.

The petition followed allegations by former board treasurer Michelle Gibs that Gietz’s behaviour lead to an “increasingly hostile and intolerable” work environment.

None of the allegations have been proven in court but a lawsuit is pending.

The board initially asked the province to oversee the review however at a meeting with Alberta Education officials, trustees were informed a review was the sole responsibility of the local board.

At a regular board meeting Tuesday, trustees unanimously passed a motion that a panel of three members provide oversight and conduct an independent, external operational review of the Palliser Regional School system.

Board members and school trustees will form the panel and four school council chairs from various regions will be consulted to ensure transparency.
