Denzel Bird hires new lawyer in attempted murder, sexual assault case

LETHBRIDGE – A new lawyer has taken on the case of Denzel Dre Colton Bird, after he dismissed his original lawyer for the second-time last week.

Tonii Roulston, who practices law out of Calgary, took over the case Wednesday morning (May 31), with an agent appearing for her saying they needed time to collect the disclosure from Bird’s previous counsel. The case was then adjourned to June 13.

Bird’s last lawyer, Greg White, appeared in Lethbridge Provincial Court on May 26, saying his client no longer wanted him to handle the matter. White was then given permission to withdraw from the case. The same thing happened on Apr. 6, but Bird went on to rehire White just two weeks after dismissing him.

The charges against Bird include attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated assault and break and enter.

Those charges are in connection to what the Lethbridge Police Service called a random attack on a 25-year old woman last September.

In a media release from LPS, they say the victim was walking to work on the morning of Sept. 30, 2016, when she was struck with a weapon, dragged into the alley off 6 Avenue South and sexually assaulted.

She sustained life-threatening injuries, which required months of treatment in a Calgary hospital.
