LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge baseball players are hosting a big tournament this coming weekend.

The Lethbridge Intermediate AAA Bisons will compete for a provincial Little League title against teams from Calgary, Edmonton and Medicine Hat. The Little League Intermediate Divisional Championships take place at Atso Towaawa Park (199 Jerry Potts Boulevard West) starting Thursday.

The Bisons kick off the tournament against Medicine Hat at 2:30 p.m.

A series of round-robin games will determine the two finalists. A best-of-three championship series will determine the winner. The round-robin game between the finalists will count as game one of the best-of-three.

In a release, Bisons coach Denny Puszkar said his team has been getting ready for the last six weeks.

“The boys have been working hard at practice and we have challenged them by playing a good portion of our games against older bantam teams to get ready for this tournament,” he stated in the team-issued release.

“The boys have seen a variety of different arms over the past month and are ready to quickly make the adjustments that will be needed this weekend.”

Earlier this summer, the boys’ team won a tournament in Innisfail and followed that up with a second-place finish at an event in Okotoks. Since then, they’ve played exhibition games against their soon-to-be opponents for this weekend as well as Bantam AA teams from Calgary, central Alberta and Lethbridge.

“I am happy with what has emerged from this group. We have some exceptional arms and are deep in pitching overall. We can hit up and down the line up and have some kids with top-end speed. And our defense has improved throughout the summer.” Puszkar said.

Opening ceremonies for this weekend’s tournament will take place after the opener at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 11. The tournament runs through to Sunday, July 14.
