LETHBRIDGE, AB – 21 firefighters from four stations responded to a residential fire early this morning.

The incident happened at around 3:00 a.m. at a residence along Lettice Perry Road North. Several callers to 911 reported flames coming from a garage.

Flames then spread to another garage, a residence and vehicles. Lethbridge Police members who were in the area patrolling responded to the scene and started evacuating neighbouring residences.

When fire crews arrived, they found at least one structure fully engulfed in flames. For several hours, firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze and make sure all hot spots were out.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and fire investigators are on scene this morning looking into the origin, cause and circumstances of the incident.

“It [was a] residential fire that appears to have started behind the house and affected properties on both sides and with intense enough heat that melted [siding] with all the surrounding and immediate surrounding houses,” said Marc Royer, Fire Prevention Officer, Investigator and Inspector.

He said the investigation is in its early stages, noting a lot of the site was frozen upon arrival due to the cold overnight weather conditions.

“We’re still waiting for the soil and the wood to unthaw a little bit so we can move it,” he told LNN on scene.

“If we have an idea where the fire is, we have to be able to move the dirt, move evidence and take pictures as we go along, and right now we can’t really move anything. It’s all frozen,” Royer explained.

“We have our theories on what happened but until we can get into the digging out of the fire, there’s not much we can do.”

He said they don’t know of any items lost but noted three garages (including both adjacent properties) were affected and all three had vehicles inside of them.

Royer said one vehicle was driveable, but the other two impacted were damaged enough to prevent driving, adding the home on the site of the fire was completely totalled.

More details are expected at the conclusion of the investigation.
