Salvation Army introduces “Tap to Give” option for Christmas Kettle Campaign

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Southern Albertans now have a new way of giving back.

For the Salvation Army’s holiday season donation drive, Major Donald Bladen says they have introduced contact-less methods of collecting donations.

“We have a tap function on each of our kettles. That would receive a five-dollar donation from someone providing a credit card or debit card tap on that particular device.”

Tap to Give is a new addition to this year’s Christmas Kettle Campaign and was done to alleviate concerns about spreading COVID-19.

This functionality was rolled out across the country, and from what he has heard, it has been a great success early on.

Bladen says he does not want to make anyone feel anxious about giving money through the traditional methods but felt it was best to give a wide array of options.

Donations can also be made online or by phoning your local branch.

This year, the Lethbridge Salvation Army is sticking to its goal of raising $150,000.

“With COVID and what’s going on with the lack of volunteers and not as many kettles out this year, it might be a bit of a stretch, but you know, we have to reach for the sky.”

Bladen told LNN that any money collected through this campaign will be used to help people with whatever practical needs they might have, whether it be food, clothes, household items, medicine, or anything else.

Demand for their services has been up this year due to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and he expects that to remain the case through the Christmas season.

In Lethbridge, volunteers will be at both Walmart locations, Superstore, Costco, and Park Place Mall.

The Christmas Kettle Campaign runs until Christmas Eve.
