U of L Pronghorns announce season schedule

Jul 28, 2021 | 12:00 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns are gearing up for the 2021-22 season.

During the virtual Canada West AGM in May, the sports body approved alternative sport formats for the upcoming season to ensure athletes could get out on the field.

The alternative formats have a greater focus on regional play where possible and the number of games have been reduced for basketball and soccer. The change in formatting will only be in effect for the 2021-22 season, after which formats will return to their previous models.

Pronghorn women’s soccer will be the first team to see Canada West action. The team, led by new head coach Macky Singh, will be on the road September 11 and 12 against the Mount Royal Cougars and Alberta Pandas.

The next weekend, athletes return to Lethbridge to host a triple header at the University Community Stadium on Saturday, September 18. Women’s soccer hosts the MacEwan Griffins at no one, with the men’s soccer team opening their season at 2:15 p.m. against the Mount Royal Cougars.

The Pronghorn rugby club will conclude the home opening weekend with a 7:00 p.m. matchup versus the Alberta Pandas and the first leg of the Suggitt Cup.

Director of Pronghorn Athletics Neil Langevin said, “the return to competition has been a long time coming and we are really excited for our student-athletes to get the opportunity to represent the U of L again and to welcome students, staff, faculty and the entire Lethbridge community back on campus.”

“Our athletes have been so resilient through the past year and a half and we have missed hosting the Lethbridge community on campus for the last 16 months.”

He added that more details are to come, but a welcome back event is in the works for September 18 to go along with the triple header.

Pronghorn basketball will open the Canada West season on home court against the Calgary Dinos October 29 and 30. The game on October 30 has been earmarked for a jersey retirement ceremony for former players Shawna Molcak and Perry Mirkovich. During the final weekend of the first semester, children 17 and under will get free admission to the December 4 game against the MacEwan Griffins.

Pronghorn women’s basketball will host their annual ‘Shoot for a Cure’ game on January 22 against the Mount Royal Cougars.

In November, Pronghorn swimming travels up to Edmonton to compete at the Canada West Championships, while the Track and Field championships will be hosted by the University of Manitoba on February 25 and 26.
