LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Alberta Government is doing its part to ensure the City of Lethbridge can collect organic materials from households.

From the Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI), a total of $4.75-million will be given to the city to purchase solid waste cards and vehicles for all areas of the community.

The city will be purchasing four organics collection trucks and 36,000 bins.

“The City of Lethbridge prioritizes requests for funding and I am happy to see that this project was accepted with such a significant amount allocated. I am excited to see these projects be completed,” says Lethbridge-East MLA Nathan Neudorf.

Compost collection is set to begin in 2023 in Lethbridge. A pilot project will commence in spring 2022.

While more details still need to be ironed out, the city told us earlier this year that the following items can typically go into an organics bin:

  • Cooked and raw foods – dairy, fruit, vegetables, bread
  • Napkins, paper plates, paper food wrapping, and paper bags
  • Grass cuttings, clippings, twigs, weeds
  • Peelings and unwanted leftovers
  • Teabags, tea leaves, coffee grinds, and coffee filters

Households will be able to select what size they want their bin to be with three separate options.
