Dr. Verna Yiu leaving AHS as President and CEO

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The search will now begin for a new person to head up Alberta Health Services (AHS).

Dr. Verna Yiu was originally appointed as the President and CEO of AHS in 2016 for a five-year term. Her contract was extended by two years on June 2, 2021, meaning it was set to expire in 2023.

She says it has been an “extraordinary privilege” to lead AHS for the last six years.

“I would like to thank all staff, physicians and volunteers for their steadfast care of Albertans and their ability to put patients and families first, particularly as we have navigated through the past two pandemic years.”

“I took on this role in 2016 because I saw an opportunity to further solidify culture, teamwork, and excellence within the organization. I believed that we could develop better relationships with our patients and families, and with Alberta communities. I am so proud and grateful for all AHS team members as well as our advisory groups and councils, and all the foundations who support AHS.”

Gregory Turnbull, AHS Board Chair, says he is grateful for Yiu’s leadership during the worst days of the pandemic and for her dedicated service.

The organization has been planning for an orderly transition.

The AHS Board will appoint an interim President and CEO shortly to help ensure that it has leadership and stability.

A search committee was formed a few months ago and the process of finding Yiu’s permanent replacement is already underway.

Mauro Chies, Vice President of Cancer Care Alberta and Clinical Support Services, has been asked to be the interim CEO.

A media release from AHS on Monday did not state the reason for Yiu’s departure.
