Lethbridge County warns of potential soil erosion

LETHBRIDGE COUNTY, AB – Officials at Lethbridge County are asking farmers to monitor their fields for signs of erosion.

They say the region has been experiencing weather conditions in recent months that could contribute to the development of soil erosion.

Lethbridge County says in a news release, “Winter cycles of freezing and thawing, combined with dry conditions and extreme winds, have made the soil in Lethbridge County very susceptible to erosion.”

According to the county, soil erosion can result in substantial damage to agricultural lands and losses in crop production.

“For each inch of topsoil lost to erosion, crop yields can be lowered by several bushels per acre,” says Lethbridge County.

The Lethbridge County Agriculture Services Board says it works alongside producers to try to combat the effects of soil erosion, but in cases where there is a lack of compliance, they can issue Soil Erosion Notices under the Soil Conservation Act.

The notices allow the municipality to take action to stop soil loss from occurring. Any remedial costs are charged back to the landowner.

Anyone with questions about soil erosion can phone the Lethbridge County office at 403-732-5333.
