Lethbridge firefighters offer tips to keep homes safe from wildfires
LETHBRIDGE, AB – With many parts of central and northern Alberta impacted by wildfire, Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) is reminding residents that household emergency preparedness also includes taking preventative measures on the outside of their home.
Officials said as wildfires can breach city limits through airborne embers and ash, it’s important to assess residential properties for any hazards that could spark a fire, especially when conditions are dry. Some of these items include improperly disposed of smoking materials, residential barbecues, and fire pits.
Other materials to watch for that could catch fire include trees and other foliage, firewood piles, fences and wooden structures, decorative plants, dried grass, leaves, and tree needles.
LFES said those items should be kept tidied and at a safe distance from one’s residence. Additionally, officials said gutters and eavestroughs should be cleaned regularly to prevent potential ignition.
