Quenching your thirst: public drinking stations operational again in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – If you are out and about and find yourself needing a drink, the City of Lethbridge has you covered.

The City has confirmed that public drinking stations have returned. The water outlets can be found at Nicholas Sheran Park, Legacy Park, Henderson Lake Park and in Galt Gardens.

The fountains were first installed in July 2023.

“The stations saw a lot of usage in the first summer season,” says Jeremy Charlesworth, Water & Wastewater project manager.

“The Galt Gardens station alone filled the equivalent of 12,000 water bottles, or 133 a day.”

Officials note that the stations hook up to hydrants, which means there is a continuous water source. This in turn ensures important accessibility to water, especially for vulnerable people in the community during the hot summer months.

The water dispensers were designed and manufactured by staff at the Water Treatment Plant. The stations are part of a two-year pilot project unveiled by city council in November 2022. Council is anticipated to review the program later this year.
