Lethbridge Police recruiting volunteers for downtown watch

Jul 3, 2019 | 10:04 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Police Service is looking for up to 20 people to volunteer to be part of their watch program.

Watch volunteers communicate directly with police as they patrol the downtown core in teams and are responsible for reporting criminal activity, safety concerns, traffic hazards, nuisance behaviour, first aid, and keeping a daily record of all incidents and activities. They also provide tourist information and Safe Walk services.

“Since its inception in early May, The Watch has been welcomed with open arms downtown and we are excited to expand the program,” said Jeff Hansen, Watch Manager.

Volunteers will wear red shirts and coats so as to be highly visible and recognizable and are deployed seven days a week.

Training includes non-violent crisis intervention, street awareness and patrol safety tactics, CPR and first aid, diversity awareness, citizen powers of arrest, report writing and note taking, mental health awareness, occupational health and safety, and more.

The detachment is looking for people who are enthusiastic and outgoing, and have strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Volunteer shifts last four hours and you must be willing to commit to one shift per week.

Volunteer applications are available online through this link and can be submitted by email to jeff.hansen@lethbridgepolice.ca

The deadline is Friday, July 19th, 2019.
