LETHBRIDGE — A 25 year old city woman has been charged in connection with a string of incidents where north-side crime prevention signs were damaged and a man was threatened.

Around 1:00-am on Sunday, August 25, a homeowner along the 500 block of 9 Street North heard noises outside. When he checked outside, he saw a woman with a black band painted across her eyes standing in front of his house ripping down a sign he had put up on a tree that asked people to call police if they see drug activity.

Dozens of similar crime prevention signs were put up in the area by neighbours concerned about crime.

When the man confronted the woman and told her to leave, she was belligerent and threatened the man before leaving the area on a bicycle.

A short time later, a man from a home along the 1800 block of 6 Avenue North heard a voice outside and when he went to check the front of his property he also saw a woman with black paint across her eyes. She was walking down the street, ripping down a number of the crime prevention signs he had put up. When the man confronted the woman and asked why she was damaging the signs, she began swearing at the man and alleged the signs were “anti-addict” then left the area.

At around 3:30 a.m., the man from the first home again heard noises outside and saw the same woman as earlier and two other people. The woman was spray painting a crime prevention sign the man had put up on a tree.

The woman was again belligerent and alleged the signs were “anti-addict.” The group left the area and the man followed them in his vehicle while he was on the phone with police. Officers were not immediately available to attend and after a short time both parties went their separate ways.

Following further investigation, the woman was identified and arrested at a south-side home early in the evening.

Ashley Dawn Marshall is charged with uttering threats and two counts of mischief to property. Marshall was released with conditions that she not attend within 100 meters of the two north-side homes and is prohibited from having contact with the victims. She is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 30.

Police note the woman is NOT an employee or associated with the Supervised Consumption Site.
