A 19-year old man charged with aggravated assault and theft of a motor vehicle in connection with a north Lethbridge swarming and stabbing in early December, has pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Alexander Roxby Styra has also pleaded not guilty to an additional two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, mischief, and two counts of theft under $5,000 in relation to two non-related matters.

A charge of failure to attend was dropped by the Crown.

Styra appeared via CCTV from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre Wednesday morning, where he is being held. He has elected trial by Provincial Court judge.

According to Lethbridge Police, around 11:30 p.m. Dec. 5, a citizen heard a commotion in the alley along the 200 bl. of Mayor Magrath Dr. N. and saw a group of people running. A call for help was heard, and after going to check the area, the citizen found a 16-year-old suffering from stab wounds. He was taken to a Calgary hospital with serious injuries.

During their investigation, police determined that an 18-year-old female had made arrangement to meet the 16-year-old. Unbeknownst to him, a group of people were hiding in the alley waiting to assault him. The victim was punched, kicked, stabbed, and left at the scene.

The next day, police executed a search warrant on a home and found what they believed to be the knife used in the stabbing. Five people in total were charged, including Strya, Trinity Savard, 18, and three young offenders ages 16 and 17.

Strya is also facing charges in connection with two other serious incidents including theft of a motor vehicle and mischief after a Buick Enclave SUV was stolen in October 2019, and another incident on Aug. 22, 2018 when Lethbridge Police say they observed a stolen Dodge Cirrus in the parking lot of 7-11 and Ace Liquor along the 2600 block of Scenic Drive North. They noted that the vehicle had previously been involved in a hit and run and the two occupants were known to them.

As the officers approached the vehicle, two masked men got out – one ared with a collapsible baton and the other with a knife – and both were promptly taken into custody without incident.

A court date for all three matters has yet to be set.
