U of L announces plans for “virtual” fall convocation

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Students graduating from the University of Lethbridge can expect a similar convocation to the one seen this spring.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the school was forced to change its graduation plans and now looks at the previous event as the “blueprint” that they will build upon.

“From faculty and staff, to board and senate members — convocation, and all it symbolizes — is our purpose and the reason behind the work we do at the University of Lethbridge,” says U of L President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Mike Mahon.

“One of the highlights of my position is I have the honour of congratulating personally each of our graduates as they cross the stage at our in-person ceremonies. This, unfortunately, is not possible right now and we will celebrate our students’ remarkable achievements in various ways online.”

In October, students will receive a special package from the university, containing their cap, tassel, parchment, and for those who have earned high-enough marks, their honour cards.

A celebration video will be shared with graduates that celebrates their achievements.

“We cannot come together, but it is essential we find a way to celebrate together this momentous occasion,” says U of L Chancellor Charles Weaselhead. “Our students are supported in so many ways and by so many people throughout their academic journey. It is essential we find a way to acknowledge this significant step in their lives and the people who helped them along the way.”

On social media, people are encouraged to talk about the ceremony using the hashtags #ulethgrad2020 and #ulethalumni.
