City of Lethbridge and community to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Week this month

LETHBRIDGE, AB – June 21 marks National Indigenous Peoples Day, and several organizations around Lethbridge will be celebrating the occasion for a full week.

An opening ceremony for the week will be held at the flag poles outside of Lethbridge City Hall on Tuesday, June 21 at 9 a.m. All members of the community are invited to attend and hear from officials and community organizations.

People can take in Buffalo Teaching with Dan Fox at Galt Gardens on June 21 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Bannock and tea will be served.

On Wednesday, June 22, there will be National Indigenous Peoples Day activities at Fort Whoop-Up. The events, led by the Galt Museum and Archives, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be a mini powwow from 2 to 3 p.m. and attendees can enjoy traditional Blackfoot berry soup and hot mint tea.

Additionally, on Wednesday, the Family Ties Association will host Blackfoot Community Yoga at the Boys and Girls Club (1405 8 Ave. N) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. A Blackfoot Elder will translate 15 poses into Blackfoot and offer a traditional prayer.

On Thursday, June 23, the Lethbridge Sport Council and Ravens Lacrosse program will host Lacrosse in the Park. Residents can try out the sport of lacrosse at Galt Gardens with Chad Chief Moon from 12 to 2 p.m. On Friday, June 24, the Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association & AHS Outreach team host Spirit Horse Painting in the Park from 1:30 to 3 p.m. This will take place at Galt Gardens and attendees can hear Elders share stories and paint. Bannock and tea will be served while supplies last.
