LETHBRIDGE, AB – A local post-secondary student is set to receive an award for her work helping in the community.

Talayna Ekelund will receive the University of Lethbridge (U of L) Volunteer Award at the Spring 2024 Convocation.

In one year alone, the U of L says the anthropology and pre-education student logged more than 600 hours of volunteer time. She helped various organizations in Lethbridge and southern Alberta.

Since enlisting with Volunteer Lethbridge, Ekelund has worked at casinos, bingos, galas, dinners, bottle drives and food banks, along with other events and initiatives. The U of L adds she has served as a tutor and mentor to children and youth.

Some of the groups Ekelund has worked with include the Interfaith Food Bank, Lethbridge Family Services, Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization, Inclusion Lethbridge, Stitch It Forward Society, Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association, the United Way, the Lethbridge Dragon Boat Festival, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, the YMCA and YWCA, Opokaa’sin Early Intervention Society, Youth One, Womanspace, Hungarian Society and many others.

In addition to her award from the U of L, she has received a Leaders of Tomorrow Award from Volunteer Lethbridge.

Ekelund will receive her U of L recognition on May 30, 2024.

The announcement from the U of L comes during National Volunteer Week, a time to recognize the work of community helpers across the country.
