Slide the City for a Great Cause

LETHBRIDGE – Lethbridge Family Services is bringing an exciting fundraiser to the city this weekend!

It’s teamed up with Fun City Sliders and First Choice Savings to setup a 1000 foot long slip and slide along 5 Avenue North. The slide will be big enough to cover two lanes of traffic.

The family fun event will run from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 23. Tickets are still available for single, three or unlimited rides at www.funcitysliders.com. Tubes are provided at the event.

Peter Casurella, LFS Coordinator of Advancement and Community Relations, says demand has grown increasingly over past years, and these funds will help to extend services.

“We’re building on a new addition to our main site, and it’s giving us the opportunity to use an outdoor space, and turn it into a safe and inclusive wellness area with a kids playground,” noted Casurella, on where proceeds will specifically be used.

“[We’ll be able] to do programming with our clients, we can be outside in the sun, and have a safe environment to engage with our staff. It’s also going to be a great extension to the outdoor area we already have for our clients who have disabilities… This provides them more space to move around in.”

Roughly 100 volunteers over 16 years old are needed to help out during the day with a variety of duties. As an incentive each volunteer will receive a free triple slide pass.

Casurella is thrilled to be hosting the event, saying LFS anticipates more than 4,000 people to participate. Those who already have tickets can pre-register and get wristbands ahead of time at the LFS Main Office along 2 Avenue A North. Tickets will also be sold there, as well as on-site at the slide. Casurella noted that it will be open no matter the weather, unless there are factors that could put participants in danger.

Additionally, those attending are encouraged to take transit that day or walk to the site. However, there will be parking available at a number of City of Lethbridge parking lots along 4 Avenue North, excluding the lot east of the transit headquarters.

Motorists are also advised that 5 Avenue North between Stafford Drive and the Scenic Drive North overpass will be closed off from 6-am to approximately 11-pm. You’re asked to use either 9 avenue North or Highway 3 as an alternate route.
