Growing produce for a good cause

LETHBRIDGE, AB – If you want to make new friend, learn more about food and get involved with a local cause, the Interfaith Learning Garden might be for you.

The program is run every summer by Lethbridge’s Interfaith Food Bank.

“They’ll get a group of volunteers, or people who have gone through different kitchen programs such as Big Chef Little Chef or Shop Smart and they will, once a year, plant all their seeds and every now and then they’ll get watered,” explained Cole Jonassen, a volunteer with Interfaith Food Bank.

“Over time they’ll grow and eventually, they’ll have a big harvest where they harvest everything and most of it goes to their warehouse so they can give it to clients to put in their food hampers, and some they’ll use in the kitchen for their kitchen programs.”

The Interfaith Food Bank Society of Lethbridge has many programs available run through the Interfaith Chinook Country Kitchen. Some of these include Big Chef Little Chef, Kids in the Kitchen and the Family Cooking Club.

Jonassen said the garden harvest program has been around for about three years.

“It definitely helps out on their client services because it’s a large source of their produce that they give to their clients.”
