LETHBRIDGE — A 29 year old city man is in custody and facing an assault charge, after a stabbing outside the Supervised Consumption Site on Saturday (Sept 7).

Around 2:30 p.m. police responded to a stabbing along the 1000 block of 1 Avenue South. Officers secured the area and seized a knife that had been left in the roadway. Further investigation determined a 39-year-old man and 29-year-old man – who are known to one another – had been involved in a physical altercation in the street.

The younger man struck the older man in the head causing him to fall to the ground then produced a knife and stabbed him in the face. The victim was taken to hospital where he was treated and released.

A short time later police located the accused at a northside home where he was arrested.

Nathan Luke Brewer, is charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon. Following a Judicial Interim Release hearing, a Justice of the Peace released Brewer from custody with several conditions including no contact with the victim and a prohibition from attending within 100 metres of the Supervised Consumption Site.

Brewer was scheduled to appear in court September 18. However, the following day (Sept. 8), he went back to the SCS and was arrested for breach of a recognizance. He is now in custody awaiting a second Judicial Interim Release.
