GATINEAU, QC – Parks Canada is ramping up its efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Parks announced the suspension of visitor services and the closure of its facilities on March 19 but have noted high visitation levels to have occurred in a number of parks following that action.

Due to this, the agency is setting additional measures and is temporarily suspending all motor vehicle access by visitors to all national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas.

The move will come into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25.

“This action is intended to significantly reduce visitation and respects the advice of public health experts to stay home and avoid public gatherings,” read a release.

Parks noted that all visitor parking facilities and associated services are closed at Parks Canada sites until further notice.

Highways and roadways that pass through Parks Canada places will stay open, with commercials and through traffic permitted on those corridors. Parking is not allowed on highways and roadways.

Parks Canada will continue to deliver services that are critical to Canadians, which includes highway maintenance and snow removal, fire response, dam operations and water management on historic waterways, plus avalanche forecasting and control.

Indigenous traditional activities in Parks Canada sites will continue, but users are asked to follow the advice of health officials on social distancing.

“Local services are limited,” the release stated.

“Residents of townsites will still be permitted vehicular access, but those with recreational properties within national parks are strongly encouraged to stay home. Please respect all travel advisories.”

Parks Canada continues to ask Canadians to stay home. More details on how Parks Canada is responding to the pandemic can be found pc.gc.ca.
