Report COVID-19 complaints to AHS, not police

Mar 26, 2020 | 3:12 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) is advising the public that the Alberta Health Services website is the best place to make COVID-19 related complaints.

While the provincial government has announced amendments to the Public Health Act that would give police and community peace officers the power to administer fines to those violating public health orders, LPS says the process is still being finalized.

Once a complaint has been received by AHS, they will assess the appropriate response and a Health Inspector will be assigned.

Health Inspectors can request assistance from law enforcement if needed.

“LPS thanks the public in advance for following the above process to ensure the capacity of our dispatchers and City 311 is not overwhelmed by COVID-19 related calls,” reads a statement from LPS.

The provincial government said Wednesday that fines could be issued for things like not complying with mandatory self-isolation after returning to Canada, not self-isolating after showing symptoms of COVID-19, or attending large gatherings, among others.

Penalties, as outlined by Justice Minister Doug Schweitzer, are as follows:

“Fines now administered through tickets for violating an order have increased from up to $100 per day to a prescribed fine of $1,000 per occurrence. Courts will also have increased powers to administer fines of up to $100,000 for a first offence and up to $500,000 for a subsequent offence for more serious violations.”
