Dec 8, 2021 | 11:26 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Calgary hit the Enmax ice on Wednesday (Dec 8) night with determination but, it was a Hurricane player who took the first penalty.

Just two minutes after puck drop, Trevor Thurston went to the box for interference. Not to be outdone, three minutes later, Calgary’s Sean Tschigerl earned a double minor for slew-footing.

There were no goals by the mid point of the period but, the Canes’ Chase Wheatcroft was tapped for holding at 11:09.

It was the Hitmen on the board first. At 13:18 Oliver Tulk found the back of the Canes’ net, on a pass from Tyson Galloway. It was a 1-0 score for Calgary when the buzzer ended the fist 20-minutes of play.

The second frame got underway the same way the first began. Just 41 seconds in, Calgary’s Zac Funk skated to the box for unsportsmanlike conduct, while the Canes’ Jett Jones also visited the box for roughing.

Calgary’s Oliver Tulk nailed his second goal of the game at 4:24, breaking up a series of double penalties. At 6:05, the Hitmen’s Blake Allan was penalized for slashing, while the Canes’ Trevor Thurston logged his second penalty of the game, this time for roughing.

The Canes made it on the scoreboard at 14:19, as Jett Jones took the assist from Tristan Zandee and Easton Kovacs, to cut Calgary’s lead in half.

At 14:46, Hitman Blake Heward and the Canes’ Logan Barlage were both in their respective penalty boxes for roughing.

The middle fame ended with the Hitmen leading 2-1 and as the buzzer went, Calgary’s David Adaszynski was assessed a double minor for another slew-footing incident.

The final 20 minutes got off to a great start for the home team. At 2:06, Just Hall, with the assist from Logan Wormald and Nolan Bentham, slid the puck into Calgary’s net to tie the game 2-2. The only penalty in the period went to Calgary’s Jackson van de Leest for cross checking.

Regulation time ended with the 2-2 tie, setting up the Canes’ first shoot-out of the season. After five unsuccessful shots, Logan Barlage skated toward Calgary’s net and deftly fired the shot that gave the Hurricanes a 3-2 win – a bonus for Barlage, who was logging his 250th career game.

After 22-games, the Hurricanes have 21 points and are 10-11-1 on the season.

The next game for the Canes is Friday night, when they host the Red Deer Rebels.
