Gas prices rise 26 c/L in one week in Lethbridge and 60 cents from last year

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It is unprecedented territory for drivers who are facing the highest-ever prices for gasoline.

In Lethbridge on Wednesday, GasBuddy.com reports that the average price for regular unleaded gas is $1.73.9 per litre, the most expensive it has ever been dating back to went the company started tracking fuel prices in 2008.

This marks an increase of 15 cents per lite from yesterday, 26 cents from the same time last week, and 60 cents from the same period in 2021.

People across the province and the country are feeling the effects in similar ways.

The provincial average for fuel is $1.67.6 per litre, rising by slightly lower but similar amounts to Lethbridge.

Nationally, gas stations are charging $1.84.5 per litre.

British Columbians are paying the most in Canada at $2.00.7 per litre.

“We’ve never been in this situation before, with this level of uncertainty,” says Patrick De Haan, Head of Petroleum Analysis with GasBuddy. “As we lose a major global producer under the weight of deserving bipartisan sanctions for invading a sovereign country, the cost is high.”

While the war in Ukraine is being attributed as the primary reason for surging prices, lower inventory and higher demand for fuel are also contributing to this.

Earlier this week, the Alberta Government announced that it would stop collecting provincial fuel taxes starting in April, which would effectively lower prices at the pumps by 13 cents per litre.
