LETHBRIDGE, AB – The annual Jane’s Walk festival is in Lethbridge this weekend.

The event is on from Friday, May 6 to Sunday, May 8, 2022. It’s a global pedestrian-powered movement of neighbor-led walking tours inspired by urbanist and activist Jane Jacobs. It was created in 2007, following Jacobs’ death in 2006.

The City of Lethbridge noted that the aim of the walk is to encourage people to get out on the streets of their neighborhoods to discover any unseen, under-celebrated and unique stories about their city.

A release from the City stated that, “through the simple act of walking together and discussing what makes a neighborhood, Jane’s Walk helps knit people together into stronger and more resourceful communities.” The event has proven successful in the past.

In 2019, Lethbridge hosted 13 walks with over 400 participants across the city.

The writings of Jane Jacobs championed a community-based approach to city building.

She wrote about sidewalks, parks, design and self-organization and advocated for higher density in cities, short blocks, local economies and mixed-use zoning.

More about Jacobs’ life and work is available at the Jane’s Walk website. Detailed walk descriptions, times and meeting locations can also be found through the event’s webpage.
