City of Lethbridge begins phase two of green cart rollout

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge has continued its green cart project, rolling out new carts around the community.

The city began delivering the carts to residents of the Northwest on April 11, 2023, and they will begin moving them to over 34,000 homes across Lethbridge by May 12.

The first city-wide curbside organics collection date is scheduled for May 16, 2023. They will be collected weekly from May to October and bi-weekly from November to April.

James Nicholls, Collections Manager, Waste Utility & Environment with the City of Lethbridge said the green cart program gives residents the chance to learn about what can and can not be composted, and how they can be more environmentally responsible with their waste.

Nicholls said “We’re really pushing folks to try that kitchen pail out and start taking that kitchen waste that they normally throw in the garbage into the green cart.”

The carts will cost residents $5 on their monthly utility bill starting in May. Officials estimate more than half of what currently goes into the black garbage bins could be put into green carts.

Condos and apartment buildings will be getting bins at a later time, pending discussions with building managers.

Information on what can be put into compost bins can be found using the Waste Wizard tool on the city’s website. Schedules for pickup can be found on the Lethbridge Loop app.
